Course Description

This course will be an introduction to algebraic topology, concentrating on homotopy, the fundamental group, and homology.

Homework

Homework is an important part of any math class. It is important that you practice doing the problems. This will help you to understand the material better and will prepare you for the exams. Homework will be assigned weekly, and will generally be due on Mondays.

You are encouraged to discuss the homework, and to work together on the problems. However each student is responsible for the final preparation of his or her own homework papers.

It is important to cite any sources that you consult while working on the homework. It is a serious violation of the honor cord to consult solutions to homework problems that have been posted on the internet or appear elsewhere.

Exams

One midterm and one final will be given. The final is scheduled to be Wednesday, May 14, 2:00-5:00pm.

Course Grade Determination

The course grade will be computed as follows:

  • Homework - 30%
  • Midterm - 30%
  • Final - 40%

  • Office Hours

Sometimes it is helpful to have one-on-one conversations, which is not really possible during the scheduled class time. This is the purpose of office hours. Office hours are times that I have set aside in my schedule to be available to you. This gives you the opportunity to ask questions about something you didn't understand the in the lecture or a homework problem. Please take advantage of this time.

I will hold office hours Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:00-4:00pm, but am often available in my office. You can also always email me at cleidy@wesleyan.edu to make an appointment.

    Students with Disabilites

It is the policy of Wesleyan University to provide reasonable accommodations to students with documented disabilities. Students, however, are responsible for registering with Disabilities Services, in addition to making requests known to me in a timely manner. If you require accommodations in this class, please make an appointment with me during the first two weeks of class, so that appropriate arrangements can be made. All discussions will remain confidential. Students with disabilities should also contact Laura Patey. Please see http://www.wesleyan.edu/studentaffairs/disabilities/index.html for more information.
